S.J.V. Consultants Ltd. established ourselves as leading practitioners of geophysical inversions. We parallelized the UBC-GIF to run on Beowulf computer clusters. This dramatically increases the calculation speed so inversions that previously took days will now run in a few hours. Clusters have been employed at S.J.V. Consultants Ltd. since 2001 and, with the advent of quad-core processors, are faster and cheaper than ever. Global access to the clusters via the Internet allows field crews to run inversions while still on site meaning clients can receive their results faster.
The clusters are also available for clients to run either their own programs or geophysical inversion software already available on the cluster. Regional and head offices can off-load processing that ties up their computers while reducing their overhead costs for system maintenance. As part of our current research program, we are currently parallelizing the UBC-GIF software for EM inversions.
